What I missed: the cheap vendor didn't have consistent quality control documentation. Their minimum order for defective replacement was twice what I needed. 2. Assuming fabric specifications are standardized
It's tempting to think "waterproof" means the same thing across all suppliers. I'd ordered 60 yards for a client who needed awning replacement. We installed it, it leaked on the first rain, and the client demanded a full redo. Now I check: does the spec sheet include a test method (ASTM D751 for coated fabrics, ISO 811 for hydrostatic head)? If they can't tell you the standard, assume the number is made up.
3. Ignoring color-matching complexity across substrate and weave
I once ordered linen jeans mens weight fabric in Pantone 286 C for a small apparel line. On my screen it looked fine. The lab dip came back, I approved it. When the bulk roll arrived, the dye looked different because linen absorbs color differently than cotton or polyester. The client rejected 200 units. Delta E was 4.8—way above the industry tolerance of <2 for brand-critical colors (Pantone Color Matching System guidelines).

The checklist that saved us ~$8,000 in potential rework
Here's what I do before any order over 50 yards:
- Shrinkage test — ask the vendor for wash/heat test results on the exact construction you're buying (knitted polyester vs woven polyester can vary wildly).
- Abrasion resistance — for upholstery, request Martindale (rub count) and confirm it matches your application.
- Color consistency across rolls — if you're ordering multiple rolls, ask for a dye-lot field. Delta E should be <2 for match, <3 for acceptable, >3 a noticeable shift.
- Hydrostatic head (for outdoor/awning fabrics) — minimum 1000 mm for light shelter, 1500+ for RV awnings.
- Fiber composition verification — get a written statement of exact % (e.g., 100% cotton, 65% polyester / 35% cotton).
One more thing: always ask "what's the return/replacement policy for defective goods?" before you order, not after. The question everyone asks is "what's your best price?" The question they should ask is "what's included in that price—in terms of QC documentation?"
What about Raymond and Raymond Waites Bedding?
I've worked with Raymond fabric for several upholstery orders. Their Raymond Waites Bedding line has decent color consistency (Delta E typically <2.5 on production runs). For knitted polyester and performance fabrics, they offer technical datasheets that include shrinkage and tensile strength. That's what I look for. Not all vendors provide that level of detail—and the ones that don't are the ones I've had problems with.

When this advice stops being useful
This checklist works for production orders where consistency matters. If you're buying a single yard for a personal project, you probably don't need to run full tests. Also, some very high-end fabrics (like jean raymond custom weaves) may need different criteria—custom weaves often have longer lead times and no standard test data. For those, rely on the mill's reputation and ask for sample yardage before committing.
